Dear Teacher and Librarian,
You are in a unique position. Everyday you come to work with the opportunity to shape our children's future. It is an amazing choice you made to follow this path. We hope THIS I DREAM will provide some tools and inspiration for you on your journey.
Now that the authors and illustrators of THIS I DREAM have shared their dreams with you and your students, here are some suggestions for activities and discussion:
- Download the PDF. Print and display the art and essays in your classroom. Consider making copies for the students to take home.
- Read the books of the authors and illustrators to your students. What elements and influences of the authors' dreams are found in their writing or art?
- Discuss these dreams with your class:
How would your students’ lives be changed if these dreams came true?
How would your school be affected? Your community?
- Have each student write a letter to the author or illustrator, responding to their dream.
- Discuss what your students think their parents and grandparents dream for them.
- Share what you dream with your students. How are your dreams for children connected to your decision to become a teacher?
- What does your class dream? Discuss this as a group.
- Ask your students to show in either essays or art, individually or in teams:
What do they dream for the world next year?
What do they dream for their children?
- Create a school-wide THIS I DREAM art show with the dreams of your students. Invite the community.
- Consider sending your students' essays and art to your government representatives. What a way to let them know the future they need to create!
Thank you for sharing our dreams, and yours. And thank you for inspiring your students to create a new future for your community and for the world.
